I am a 42-year old husband and father. I was an avid computer gamer and DOF, F-stops and the like were foreign to me until my wife introduced me to photography.

I began shooting during the latter part of March 2010 and quickly became addicted to it. I started this blog to share my journey and to learn along the way. Special thanks to my wife Eng who encouraged me and to all my friends in Blogosphere who shared their knowledge and taught me to further this craft.

dare to be different # 3 - one hobby, one family

ysabelle, she is also a photography buff and will turn 7 next month. at the moment im teaching her the rule of thirds and basic curves adjustment.

rowena my wife, who convinced me to swap playing PC games to getting involve in photography.
i thought computer games was my life until she introduced me to photography. he! he! he! (in a low husky tone voice)

just look at them, not a bad trade-off for my computer games huh!

on one of those family photo walks. . .

this is my special entry to

Applause! I admire your family. This is such a nice hobby. I am one of the fans of your wifey in photography and she did inspired me to do crazy things to achieve some masterpieces... like the 2nd photo from the top. Your little girl started early so i will not be surprise to see her own photoblog soonest. Keep it up. The family that shoots together... stays together... or something to that effect. hahahaha

I think it's wonderful how you share the same hobby :D Beautiful warm photos!

Thanks for introducing us to your family! I wish you could teach me basic curves and I have no idea what the rule of thirds is!

Smart move on your part ~ from games to photog!

Thanks Dave. I now vagulely remember the rule of thirds from a photography course I took in college 45 years ago. I think I may have been using a Kodak Brownie (and you will have to find that one in an antique store!). Also Rebecca of the Dusty Cellar has given me some great info on curves in the Picnik program. Hope you and your family get off some great shots this weekend.

How wonderful, I love how photography is a whole-family holiday - you all get to have fun, no one is left out, and no one is complaining loudly about the number of times you stop for a photo. Not that I'd know anything about that of course. Sigh...

My photography is available for purchase - visit Around the Island Photography and bring home something beautiful today!

How nice that the three of you share one and the same passion! This passion will always connect you. It's unbelievable that you've managed to overcome the computer games and to replace them with something really valuable!:-)In my family we share the love towards theatre, though noone knows what our son's Choice in life would be!

Such a family you are! How wonderful to be able to share the same interest. You must have a lot of fun together!
I just think it's a shame that you live so far away, I think it had been an honor to meet your lovely family!♥♥♥
Hugs from me...

one hobby, one family, amazingly the BEST!!! thanks for sharing the pictures, I never get to see them from Eng, and I really enjoyed each one of them, you all are very talented, I just look at Ysa's poses, and know she is very comfortable and confident of herself.

Looks like it was and is a beautiful trade.

That's great to go on "Family Photo Walks". It's so cool that it is something you share as a family.

Very, very cool! I do the same with my son (6 years old) and husband. Although, it's so hot right now that they haven't been as willing lately!

What a cute family you have, Dave! It's great that you can spend some good family/quality - time like that! They sure aren't a bad trade-off, allright! :) My boyfriend often comes along too when I go for my photo-walks.It's nice

Cool family shots Dave and one of your best posts ever. Thank you for sharing your private life. Very cool.

How fun to have the family involved in photography. Your daughter will soon be teaching you...and, I'm not joking! They learn so darn fast. These are such lovely family shots!

United by the same hobby! Just delightful. You're definitely the winner...

Luna Miranda

this is so much fun! a family of photographers! it's a smart move too, you getting involved with your family's hobby:)

Wonderful outing for all of you. Your daughter will have memories forever. Have a wonderful week!

Ah ya!!!! why restrict her creative expression by telling her the rules? I didn't know until I join a meme. I just click away. LOL

Having seen some of Ysabelle's work before I can tell you're teaching her well! She's already a talent and with the right encouragement and training she will go far.

When you finish teaching your daughter, can she then teach me to understand at least half the things you've just said? Lol!
